Having a Chat
A Safe Space to Talk
Sometimes people simply need the opportunity to talk to someone who is outside their day-to-day life. Angling4Wellness offers “Have a Chat” sessions where individuals can spend time talking in a calm, supportive environment with someone trained as a Mental Health First Aider. These conversations are informal and relaxed, often taking place outdoors alongside our wellbeing sessions, where the natural surroundings help create a comfortable space to talk openly.
Listening Without Judgement
A Mental Health First Aider is trained to listen, provide reassurance and help people feel heard without judgement. The purpose of these sessions is not to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, but to offer a supportive ear, help someone organise their thoughts, and where appropriate guide them towards further support services if they feel that would help. Many people find that simply having the opportunity to talk openly can make a real difference.
A Non-Clinical Approach
These conversations are not counselling or therapy sessions. They are non-clinical, and supportive in nature, designed to give people the chance to step away from the pressures of everyday life and have a genuine conversation in a safe environment. Clear boundaries are always maintained, and if someone needs professional help and beyond what we can offer, we will always encourage them to seek appropriate professional support.
Supporting Wellbeing Through Connection
At Angling4Wellness we believe that wellbeing often improves through connection, conversation and time spent in nature. Whether someone joins a group session or simply needs the opportunity to talk, our aim is to create a welcoming space where people feel comfortable, respected and supported.
Having a chat described here is non-clinical and is intended to support wellbeing rather than diagnose, treat, or replace professional care. If someone is in crisis or needs medical or mental health support, seek appropriate professional help.
The mental health first aiders or any person within angling4wellness or associated with angling4wellness do not and will not provide clinical advice, diagnosis, or advise on treatment.

Fishing therapy
(non-clinical)
Fishing therapy is a unique and effective approach to improving mental and physical health. Engaging in fishing activities allows individuals to experience nature, develop patience and find solace in a peaceful environment.
Fishing therapy, also known as angling therapy, has grown in popularity as a therapeutic practice, especially for veterans and people dealing with various wellness issues such as PTSD,depression, and anxiety.
In the UK, this approach has gained traction due to the availability of natural water bodies and a rich fishing tradition.
Psychological and Emotional Benefits
Reduced Stress and Anxiety: The calm environment associated with fishing, often near rivers or lakes, promotes relaxation. The repetitive nature of casting and waiting for fish creates a meditative experience, which lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
Mindfulness and Flow State: Fishing encourages mindfulness, as anglers need to focus on their surroundings, weather conditions, and subtle movements in the water. This immersion often leads to a "flow state," a mental state where time feels suspended, providing relief from negative thoughts and anxieties.
Connection with Nature: Exposure to natural settings has shown therapeutic benefits, including reduced anxiety, enhanced mood, and improved cognitive function. The "biophilia hypothesis"suggests that humans have an innate connection to nature, which helps in emotional healing and stress reduction
